JAMES REID-CUNNINGHAM

BOOKBINDING & CONSERVATION LLC

An odd book conservation project: the repair of four 18th century French bindings that were repurposed into a box concealing a decanter and small glasses. The leather hinge that holds together the two parts is very degraded and the inner hinge is split at the ends.

The leather was chemically consolidated to lessen the flaking. The leather at the hinge was lifted and the old hinge leather removed. A new hinge of airplane cotton was colored with acrylic pigment and adhered under the lifted leather. The lifted leather was then re-adhered.
